What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a popular new medical weight loss treatment that suppresses a patient’s appetite and ultimately serves as an effective means of weight loss. Originally created as a treatment for diabetes, Semaglutide boosts insulin secretion and reduces glucagon secretion in order to stabilize glycemic levels by matching GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1). Essentially Semaglutide curbs your appetite to keep you from overeating and also keeps you from feeling hungry, which results in significant weight loss.

Benefits of Semaglutide

If weight loss or overeating has been a struggle for you, Semaglutide offers many benefits as a chronic weight management program. Some of the benefits of Semaglutide injections include:

  • A gradual approach - because Semaglutide decreases your appetite and slows digestion, patients are able to slowly and safely transition to a low-calorie diet resulting in significant weight loss over a period of time.

  • Improves metabolic health - originally developed as a treatment for type 2 Diabetes, Semaglutide improves your body’s ability use insulin while also reducing the body’s level of inflammation and cholesterol.

  • Well-tolerated by most - Semaglutide injections typically cause minimal to no side effects in most patients.

  • Quick and easy to use - Semaglutide injections are only once per week, making them the perfect weight loss or weight management solution for patients with a busy lifestyle.

  • Effective - Studies show that Semaglutide injections are highly effective, with participants with a BMI of 30 or above losing an average of about 14.9% of total body weight (source).

Get answers to frequently asked questions below or if you have any questions about the program or getting started, please email Ask the Doctor.

  • • Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist that stimulates insulin release from the pancreas. Glucagon-like peptide -1 is a natural hormone that helps your body regulate your blood glucose.

    • Semaglutide was first approved by the FDA for weight loss under the name of Wegovy in June of 2014.

  • • By increasing insulin production, Semaglutide helps your body burn calories.

    • Semaglutide slows down the speed at which food travels through your digestive system (your stomach empties more slowly), causing you to eat less.

    • Semaglutide acts on your brain’s hunger signal causing you to feel full, resulting in weight loss.

  • • Clinical studies have shown that Semaglutide can help to produce significant weight loss in overweight and obese individuals. Controlled trials showed that participants who took Semaglutide lost an average of 15% to 20 % of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared to an average of 2.4% weight loss in those who received a placebo.

  • • Semaglutide is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week.

    • It is started at a low dose to minimize side effects.

    • Doses adjustments are considered every 4 weeks as needed.

  • • Semaglutide is recommended for adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater, or for those with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater and at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, or high cholesterol.

    • Semaglutide is also recommended for those who have tried to lose weight through diet and exercise but have been unsuccessful.

    • Note: Individuals who have a history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer should not use Semaglutide.

    • It is important to talk to your healthcare provider to determine if Semaglutide is a good option for you.

  • • Most patients who take Semaglutide find that they do not need additional weight management medications.

    • However, Semaglutide should not be used in combination with other GLP-1 receptor agonists or medications that increase GLP-1 receptor activity. It may be used in combination with other weight loss medications, but the safety and efficacy of such combinations have not been studied.

    • Any medications you are taking or wish to take at the same time as Semaglutide should be discussed with a qualified physician.

  • • Because Semaglutide mimics the body’s natural substances, replicating a hormone that the body produces naturally, it is generally well-tolerated and considered quite safe when prescribed by a qualified physician.

    • The most common side effects of Semaglutide for weight loss include nausea, heartburn, vomiting, and constipation.

    • Less common side effects include abdominal pain, pancreatitis, gallbladder stones or inflammation, acute kidney injury, low blood glucose, electrolyte imbalance, diabetic retinopathy, headache, fatigue and suicidal ideation.

These side effects typically subside over time, as the patient’s body gets used to the medication and they learn the routine of the new reduced fat and caloric intake.

  • • Most people will start seeing a decrease in their appetite, the sensation of being fuller faster and a decrease in their food intake in their first week. However, the entry dose is to allow your body to adjust to the new medication and to limit potential side effects. The entry dose is not considered an effective dose for significant weight loss.

    • Expect to see better results after starting the higher doses. It usually takes about 8-12 weeks to titrate to the higher doses if you do not develop significant side effects.

  • • Weight loss results will vary from person to person, but clinical studies have shown that Semaglutide can help to produce significant weight loss in overweight and obese individuals.

    • In clinical trials for Ozempic, participants lost an average of 13.5 pounds over 26 weeks when used in combination with moderate diet and exercise.

    • In a 68-week study, participants taking Ozempic lost up to 20% of their body weight and those on Wegovy lost an average of 16.0% of their initial body weight, compared to 5.7% for those taking a placebo.

    • Weight loss results are significantly better when combining Semaglutide with proper diet and exercise.
